“The instant of actuality is all we can ever know directly. The rest of time emerges only in signals relayed to us at this instant by innumerable stages and by unexpected bearers.” from The Shape of Time by George Kubler

LoadBang is a group show of performance and installation work presented by BFA and MFA students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The show engages notions of embodied presence and technological m…ediation using a range of creative techniques and media, combined with a healthy dose of irony. The pieces in the show employ a range of materials and subjects, from dry ice to war casualties, from sunsets to brainwaves to shadows, from 3d cameras to durational dance and ephemeral architecture. On the technical side, many of the the projects utilize programming to drive various live and occasionally interactive media systems. The work takes the form of live performances, installations and screenings shown over the course of a weekend at Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery.

Only the Good Parts (David Musgrave, Performance, 2011)
Only the Good Parts is a collaboration between David Musgrave (visual manipulation) and Saul Rojas (audio manipulation). In this performance Only the Good Parts will manipulate imagery and sound in order to create a encompassing experience targeting both the visual and auditory senses in hopes to fully engage the audience.

Collateral (Justin Smith, installation, 2011)
Collateral is a piece that seeks to create a physical link between civilian deaths on both sides of Operation Enduring Freedom. The piece consists of two small boxes emitting bright flashes of light. By using these disorienting flashes, the piece aims to create an atmosphere of bewilderment among the viewers. Each flash from the boxes represents one death during the 9 years of the conflict thus far. These flashes function as both a memorial to those who have been killed, and a representation of distractions that help the general population deal with the war in a way that they can process.

Provision Initiative (Lantian Xie in collaboration with Hala Ali & Hurmat ul-Ain, 2011)
Provision Initiative is a live media installation wherein viewers are queried by an agent about their national affiliations. Responses are tallied and ranked in a form reminiscent of flight information display systems.

The Distance Between You and Me (Jane Jerardi, 2011)
The Distance Between You and Me pairs the ephemeral with the embodied, the everyday with the sensual. Fleeting projected images of phantom-like arms caress a dancing, moving body in a live performance, speaking to the fragmented nature of contemporary communication and relationships.

You Are Here So Are You and You Were Too (Marla Sanvick, 2011)
You Are Here So Are You And You Were Too, uses the window galleries, Electrodes, of Defibrillator combined with hand woven fabric to reflect the space of the surrounding environment. The structure of the fabric mirrors the construction of the city. Video projection of people passing by are woven into the installation adding movement and what is essential within an urban landscape, human presence.

Cold Wars (Catherine Pancake, Installation 2011)
Cold Wars presents a spatial & interactive dialogue between a 2x2x2 clear glass cube transformed by enclosing 400 lbs of solid dry ice (CO2), and a video projection revealing fragments of the 1966 FBI file of Fluxus leader George Maciunas.
