D/fb Floorplans and setups

Attached here are Sarah’s wonderful renditions of the D/fb space: dfb – Floor Plan – Level 1 with measurements .

As requested in the recent email, please upload the following via the comments to this post:

  1. 3 OPTIONS for where you want to show, accompanied by DIMENSIONS and markings on the FLOORPLAN. You can either create a simplified version of your own, or open the pdf in photoshop and use it as basis. Make sure you upload a compressed jpg image so the blog won’t get overloaded…
  2. Short list of TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: these include anything necessitated by the setup of your piece- for example if you’re using a camera to detect motion, you need to somehow deal with background movement, lighting, etc. So in this instance you’d specify: “nothing behind my space , or need access to kinect to take out background”. Also note your piece’s effect on others: for example if it involves bright blinking lights, or requires darkness, note this.

Please note regarding setup non-electronic equipment: while I’m trying to get institutional help for general stuff like the fabric screens, pretty much anything else is on you- so start thinking of solutions for putting up projectors, sheltering technical equipment, any hardware you’d need, as well as lighting- don’t count on Joseph’s work lights as he doesn’t have many.

Description: Two frosted-acrylic boxes on the floor that contain flash rigs inside them. The flashes fire at a fairly rapid pace.

Location Options: To be completely honest, since my piece has the potential to be so distracting from other work, I am perfectly fine with taking whatever is left in terms of where people need to install. I think a window space would be good because the light could bounce out of the windows and not have as much of an impact on the other pieces, as well as serve as an attention grabber for people on the street, but if I recall someone had already laid claim to the windows.

Tech Requirements: I just need a power outlet — I’m planning on bringing an extension cord and a surge protector. As previously mentioned, the piece will be emitting bright flashes of light, so it needs to be somewhere that it’s not interfering with other people’s work.

We can talk about sharing the window spaces…I don’t need both of them. But, I think we should discuss how the pieces would respond to each other.

I think I would like to be near the DJ booth. Two options would be either the wall that is created by the DJ booth as a projection surface (which I would perform in front of) or using the DJ booth as a location to point the projector down toward the opposing North wall, as a projection surface. I could then put the video camera (for tracking there as well) out of the way of the viewer. I’m definitely open to other options too. I’ve marked the location on a jpg of the excellent set of plans that Sarah created of the space. I just have to figure out how to post the document here.

My piece is a live performance piece with movement and text, with video images mapped to my body while performing (ideally). I’m open to shifting locations in the space and having my event happen at a particular time that make sense with the other work in the show.

    Space choses:
    – I would like the spot by the south side window ( the one right by that door that leds to the basement). I think that spot would add to my overall exhibit since I am playing with creating space and textures.

    – The area opposite of the first one, to the right of the coatrack.

    – The spot by the corner by the office space seems alright as well

I have to create a stencil or sign to post my quote on the wall. I’m hanging fabrics from the ceiling ( or some sort of fabric screens) so I may need the right type of hooks since the infrastructure already exist to hang things. The fabric can act as a blocker from background interference. Possibly some sort of dim lighting maybe needed depending on how bright the projection is.
    —————–
Since I am projecting it shouldn’t interfere with anyone else because of the fabric. From what I could tell right now there I shouldn’t interfere with anyone else’s project.

I would like to use the window space(s). My piece doesn’t need both spaces but I think we (me and whomever would like to also use the space) should discuss how they will be viewed together. Since the window spaces are pretty separate from the rest of the exhibition space I don’t have any other requests regarding spacing or particular environmental contraints.

Otherwise…I think I have all the stuff I need.
